Ladles

Blodwen has commissioned a range of hand turned traditional cawl (Welsh broth) bowls, spoons, and ladles from a selection of master wood turners in the area.

Made from native seasoned sycamore and beech, these spoons, although ancient in design and history, are still used today. Small ten inch wooden spoons were always required for cawl.

The craftsman cuts sycamore butts into 12 inch long logs and with a short handled axe cuts the log into a rough spoon shape. This is then hollowed by a peculiarly shaped knife called the 'twca cam', an implement unchanged for centuries. Then the whole thing is smoothed, cleaned and finished with a short blade knife.

A similar process is undertaken in the making of ladles.
