Narrow Loom

Woven in the early 19th century these primitive blankets were characterised by their bold vertical stripes on a natural cream background.

Made by rural weavers on a single loom with the two widths being sewn up the middle, from rough fleeces and naturally dyed using madder and cochineal for reds, woad and indigo for blues and various berries and lichens for other shades, these blankets are beautiful examples of early Welsh primitive. As such they are highly sought after and increasingly hard to come by.
